I was selling this guy a directory listing one time. And I thought he sounded like a smart guy. The next thing I knew he was turning over knives and swords by the double handful. I don't know if he got in on a group buy for knives and swords dirt cheap from China or what but whatever it was, it was working.

That's not even hype, it's the total truth. What usually happens is a lady starts selling things on eBay, maybe stuff she has around the house, maybe some stuff she bought at a flea market -- I wish my dear, departed grandmother was still with us, she would've have been a Ca$h Queen Powerseller on Ebay. Anyway, the lady in question, makes a fair profit on a fairly-offered item. A few things don't sell so she's out the listing fee. One thing sells but she miscalculated the cost of shipping and so has a slight loss on the item.
But, she loves the process of it. Ebay is just plain fun for certain people. So she goes back to the flea market or she goes into a relative's basement for some old cookbooks.
That's why eBay is such a success because it taps into the entrpreneurial spirit and makes it available an a platform (marketplace) that costs much less than a flea market booth. There are so many people who just go to garage sales buy any mildly amusing junk and peddle it on ebay for a few hundred a month.
